Roxio Game Capture Review

The Good: Records both PC and Consoles. For one of the best game capture software around today, it is reasonably priced and the video editing software it comes bundled with makes it even better value for money.

The Bad: Gaming recording cannot go beyond 480p. For 1080P the Roxio Game Capture HD box comes at a premium of double the price.

The Verdict: Due to the recording at 480P, the quality is not the same as of our #1 product Movavi Video Suite. However, Roxio does offer console support which Movavi doesn’t. And for those looking to record HD quality on their consoles, there is always the Roxio Game Capture HD option.

What makes Roxio Game Capture best game capture software?

Roxio Game Capture stands out for the seamless manner in which it records gaming videos.  All capture is done in 480p. Although not the maximum achievable, this quality still offers you crisp clear recording that is not affected by blurry graphics or other external factors.  With this recording rate, the software is able to offer smaller file sizes for faster sharing online or between supported devices.  As one of the best game recording software in the market, the video editing offered was designed with gamers in mind so you can be sure that you won’t have to look elsewhere in search of how to edit your recorded gaming video. Out of the box, you will get USB, RCA and component cables included.  Whether you are looking to record your gaming on PC, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, you can count on this software to do a stellar job.

You can capture your gameplay and audio in real-time while playing on your console or PC. The recording does not affect your gaming display in any form as your picture quality will remain the same. After the gameplay has been captured, you can edit the captured video by adding transitions, voice-overs, overlays, video effects, texts and even change or add background audio to your game.

The software offers easy to use sharing mechanism which makes sharing your recordings on Facebook, YouTube etc. very easy.  In the box for this software, you will get the Roxio Game Capture card, software for  the card, the video editing software, a guide that details all you need to know about getting started, a USB cable as well as component and RCA cables.

The setup process is as simple as what can be obtained in some of the programs we have reviewed. The component connection is analog. This allows the ability to degregate quality without need for HDMI connections. The software takes around ten minutes to get completely installed but at the end of the software setup you can immediately plug in your console and USB cable and watch your gaming display on the software.

The software allows you to choose from HTSC, SECAM or PAL.  For most users, PAL is the right selection to make but you can select any of the other two if your machine doesn’t support PAL. The recording options available are AVI, WMV and DivX but like we pointed out earlier, the capture is locked on 480p. If you are looking to save gaming highlights for personal use, the AVI codec should do the job but if you are sharing on YouTube, you will be better served using WMV or DivX.

After you have setup the initial choices, you can start enjoying one click recording almost instantly. The length of time you wish to record for is up to you but you can choose an hour if you are looking at recording an entire session. Save gaming videos are displayed as thumbnails at the bottom of your screen with the first scene of the recording used as the image.

Using Roxio, you don’t need to worry about ghosting or strange textures in block color. Also the edges of the subjects in the recording do not get distorted. They remain as they should be. This is a very important feature seen in some of the best game capture software in the market.

Support from the manufacturers is great as queries not covered in the FAQ or startup guide are promptly answered.  There are short videos on the webpage showing you all you need to know about the software.

All the features covered here are for the standard Roxio software. If you want HD recording and PS4 compatibility, you can get the Roxio Game Capture HDPro instead.
