Huawei P8 Lite Review

The Good: The Huawei P8 Lite is very competitively priced, has a nice, lightweight design, and a sharp camera. It also has two SIM slots, which is a feature you don't see every day.

The Bad: The phone comes with the rather dated Android 4.4 KitKat pre-installed. The touchscreen is decent, but it doesn't always perform the best — at times it requires too much force for our liking. We aren't fans of the over-skinned user interface.

The Verdict: The Huawei P8 Lite is reasonably priced and a decent smartphone, but there are better phones out there that aren't much pricier.

Design and Build Quality

Unlike its flagship counterpart, the Huawei P8, the Lite model doesn't feature an all-metal body. However, it is still an attractive device and the side edges have metal trimming which adds a degree of luxury to this device. Overall, the device is very well built for such an affordable phone.

Software and User Experience

Certain people will be disappointed to find out that the phone comes with the rather dated version of Google's mobile OS, 4.4 KitKat. The P8 Lite has Huawei's EMUI 3.0 User Interface, and this skin changes so much stuff that the phone doesn't feel like an Android device. The custom UI has some interesting features like the ability to mute incoming calls or alarms by flipping over the handset, but other than this and a couple of other features we're not big fans of the overall experience. This isn't a high-end handset, so don't expect extremely smooth performance when executing multiple tasks. However, we wouldn't consider this phone sluggish or laggy either.

Camera

The 13MP rear camera produces sharp and in focus photos in most situations.  Colors are accurate and most people will be satisfied with the camera's performance.

Technical Specifications:

  • Display: 5.0 inches (1280x720 pixels)
  • Processor: 1.5 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53
  • Memory: 2GB
  • Storage: 16GB (expandable via microSD)
  • Camera: 13MP
  • Battery: 2,200mAh
  • OS:    Android OS, 4.4 (KitKat)
  • Dimensions: 143 x 70.6 x 7.7 mm (5.63 x 2.78 x 0.30 in)

Conclusion

All in all, this device is affordable and has a couple of good features like a sharp rear camera, decent build quality and dual SIM slots, but we feel there are some better alternatives, if you're willing to invest a bit more money.
