Asus ZenFone 2 Review

The Good: Spacious screen. The ZenFone 2 offers smooth performance and feature-rich user interface. Two SIM card slots are a bonus.

The Bad: Somewhat dim screen. Looks and feels a bit cheap. We're not impressed with the camera or the button layout.

The Verdict: The Asus ZenFone 2 is a bit too expensive for its just above average set of features. We feel that Nexus 5X and Motorola Moto X Style are both better options for a bit more money.

Design and Build Quality

We'll be honest here — the build quality is far from impressive. The ZenFone 2 doesn't feel like a strong phone, nor is it very pretty. They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so maybe we're wrong. The phone's measurements are pretty competitive, but it weighs quite a bit, so keep that in mind as well.

Software and User Experience

The Asus ZenFone 2 comes equipped with Android 5.0 Lollipop. It also uses Asus' ZenUI user interface, which offers additional features and apps to the phone, but there's one problem with these apps — they can't be uninstalled and will clutter up your app launcher menu. Performance-wise, this phone really shines, mainly thanks to the powerful Intel Atom processor and 4GB of RAM. You won't notice any lag even with heavy multitasking and demanding games.

Camera

Some users may be disappointed with the ZenFone 2's 13MP rear camera. It's not that bad in well lit locations, but its low light performance leaves a lot to be desired. The 5MP front-facing camera behaves similarly, and if you are expecting great selfies, you should probably look elsewhere.

Technical Specifications:

  • Display: 5.5 inches (1920x1080 pixels)
  • Processor: 2.3 GHz quad-core Intel Atom
  • Memory: 4GB
  • Storage: 16GB/32GB/64GB (expandable via microSD)
  • Camera: 13MP
  • Battery: 3,000mAh
  • OS:    Android OS, 5.0 (Lollipop)
  • Dimensions: 152.5 x 77.2 x 10.9 mm (6.00 x 3.04 x 0.43 in)

Conclusion

The ZenFone 2 is a decent phone that performs really well no matter what kind off app or game you throw at it. The powerful processor and a lot of RAM come with the price however, as this phone's build quality is far from impressive. It looks and feels cheap, and we don't recommend this phone if you drop your devices often.
